Running & Hiking
Today, instead of a workout, like we had originally planned, we're going to take advantage of the Silent Sundays program offered by City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation at South Mountain. The road will be closed to vehicular traffic allowing us to safely use it to run up the mountain without fear of getting run over. This is essentially the same route as the South Mountain Challenge 5 mile race but we won't be racing, we'll be running, and taking breaks as needed.
What to expect
The route starts us at the parking lot located at 10919 South Central Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85042, and is 8.91km (5.54mi) up to the end of Summit Road and 3.6km (2.25mi) down Holbert Trail. It will be challenging, possibly taking up to three hours. Sit this one out if you haven't been doing a lot of running but, there is a less intense option.
The less intense option
Hike the Holbert Trail. This will be an unguided hike up the Holbert Trail up to the end of the run. It will take approximately 90 minutes to walk up. Then we can all return using the trail.
When to meet
We will be starting the run promptly at 8am. Please arrive before so that we can get started on time.
What to bring
- Clothing for warmer temperatures and clothing for cooler temperatures.
You must bring lots of water. I'm bringing two liters, just for myself, and will be carrying it in a backpack.
How to prepare
The day before drink plenty of liquids like water and eat a balanced diet. That morning, drink more water and have a small breakfast, like some fruit or jam & toast.
